Frequently "Arfed" Questions
Will my child be handling animals?
Your child will visit the shelter animals and spend time with them every day. Many of the activities, such as ‘Treasure Pets’ and pet marketing will involve time in the shelter. Some of the craft activities involve sketching or painting of the animals. Group activities involve assigning a shelter dog for beginning obedience training, animal enrichment and basic training to adopt tips. The children are not able to just randomly handle the animals due to the uncertain origin of many of our shelter pets. All animal contact is under supervision.
My children are close in age but according to your age requirements, they would attend separate camps. Can they come to one camp together?
The camp curriculum is developed with age appropriate skill levels and knowledge base. If there is more than one year difference, it is best to have your child attend a separate camp.
For the Farmyard Friends Adventure Camps, children will be grouped according to age.
What will my child be doing at camp?
Our week-long adventures and our Farmyard Friends camps are filled with animal time, guest speakers, behind-the-scenes tours, animal-related games, activities and service projects that literally put their Compassion into ACTion! It’s all animals, all-day long! If your child loves animals of all kinds who fly, hop, run, slither, meow and gallop, these are THE camps for them!
Where does camp take place?
All week-long camps are held at our headquarters facility located at 1201 Macklind Ave. 63110.
As described above, Farmyard Friends camp participants should be dropped off and picked up at the HSMO location specified for each camp date. Children will be transported to and from Longmeadow Rescue Ranch by bus.
Do you provide lunch?
No, the Humane Society of Missouri does not provide lunch. We want to keep the price of camps as low as possible and want all of the registration fee to go directly to the programming so your child can enjoy more activities! To ensure the safety of all children, it is necessary for you to provide your child’s lunch because you will be much more able to accommodate allergies and special dietary needs.
Can you meet the needs of children who require special accommodations?
Our facility is accessible by everyone and we will do everything we can to welcome each child to our camp and meet their needs. If you have questions, please contact Camp Director JoEllyn Klepacki at (314) 951-1572 or email email@example.com
Do you provide before and after care?
The Humane Society is not able to provide before care.
For the week-long camps, you may add after care for your child on individual days or the entire week. Our Camp Director and Camp Counselors will provide animal-related activities and movies from the 3:00—5:00 pm time for an additional fee. All campers must be picked up by 5:00 pm promptly as camp staff will not be available after that time.
For Farmyard Friend campers, drop off begins at 8am. Children must also be picked up by 5pm.
What is the teacher/student ratio for camps?
There will be a Camp Director and 5 specially-trained teen camp counselors present at all times with the campers. Our Camp Director will have the assistance of additional adult staff members and volunteers throughout each camp day.
Can you pro-rate the camp registration fee if my child must miss a day of camp?
Unfortunately we cannot pro-rate our camp registration fees.
Do you offer a sibling discount?
Our camp registration fee covers the costs to run the camp, purchase the supplies, t-shirt, guest speakers, materials, bus transportation, etc. Therefore, we cannot offer sibling discounts.
Can we get a full refund if we must cancel our participation?
Our summer programs are funded entirely by participant fees. As a 501C3, we receive no city, state or federal aid nor do we receive United Way funding.
Farmyard Friends must cancel at least two weeks prior to your scheduled class. There will be a $10 processing fee applied to the refund.
Week-long Camps must be cancelled at least four weeks prior to the camp start dated due to the limited amount of space. There will be a $35 processing fee applied to the refund.
How does my 15-18 year old become a camp counselor?
Enthusiastic, animal-loving teens at 15-18 are invited to apply to become volunteer camp counselors for our summer programs. It’s a great way to earn service hours while having fun and helping a great cause.
